Claims are circulating online that PlayStation Network will integrate Ripple Link $XRP Payments will be made as early as this quarter. Of course, these reports have attracted the attention of the token community, but based on the facts, the information does not match reality.
As of May 2024, neither Sony Group nor Ripple nor the XRPL Foundation have announced anything about the partnership. And yes, the Japanese giant is introducing Web3 payments, but volatile third-party assets are not part of that plan. The company is building its own financial sector.
$XRP Does not fit into Sony’s existing token strategy
surrounding speculation $XRP Born from a misreading of the blockchain activities of conglomerates. Since December last year, a Nikkei report indicated that Sony Bank is working on a project to issue its own regulated stablecoin pegged to the US dollar.
This asset is created through the BlockBloom division for internal payments, such as payments for games on the PS Store, PSN subscriptions, and Crunchyroll content. The company’s main motivation is pragmatic: to reduce transaction costs and move away from the billions of dollars in fees paid to Visa and Mastercard. Blockchain payments are therefore coming to PlayStation as well, but within a controlled internal economy with no room for third-party tokens.
A similar desire by large corporations to control the flow of funds also explains another long-running rumor in the gaming community: the possible appearance of Bitcoin and Ethereum in Grand Theft Auto VI. Despite theories from cryptocurrency enthusiasts, Rockstar Games has not provided any data to support the integration of cryptocurrencies, and the economics of the game remain an open question.
This trend shows why insiders claim: $XRP Big companies like Sony prefer to create their own financial rules, so integration into PlayStation remains a hope that never materializes. So while Ripple continues to fight for recognition in the banking sector, the gaming industry is instead creating an alternate reality where: $XRPMillions of gamers will be using stablecoins under the direct control of platform owners.
