The open source “clear signature” standard (clear signatureA method to ensure that transactions on Ethereum are displayed in human language rather than unreadable technical code was announced today, May 12th, by the Ethereum Foundation (EF). Companies such as Ledger, Trezor, MetaMask, WalletConnect, and Fireblocks are participating in the development of this technology.
The problem this standard seeks to solve is blind signatures. Currently, signing a transaction with Ethereum is Accepting garbled hex code strings without knowing what is being accepted. According to an EF statement, this practice is costing the ecosystem billions of dollars.
According to the statement, the standard introduces three components:
- The first is the ERC-7730 proposala specification for describing transactions in human language.
- The second is a neutral registry of descriptors. (a file that translates each contract into readable text) that can be duplicated by any actor.
- The third one is ERC-8176a framework for auditors to verify the integrity of those descriptors.
According to the Clear Signatures project’s GitHub repository, the standard also includes command-line tools for wallets, protocols, and auditors to validate, format, and generate descriptors without relying on a centralized infrastructure.
Under construction, recruitment undecided
The Ethereum Foundation’s announcement makes it clear that while the standard is already operational, it is a work in progress as contributors expand its scope, improve tools, and drive adoption.
moreover, EF defines itself as a neutral custodian of standards. The repository details a voluntary onboarding process through code integration requests, indicating that adoption depends on each wallet and protocol individually.
Finally, this launch is part of the Ethereum Foundation’s multitrillion-dollar security plan announced in May 2025, whose mission, as reported by CriptoNoticias, is to allow billions of users to safely store $1,000 or more on the network.
In this framework, the eradication of blind signatures was identified by the Foundation as follows: One of the ecosystem’s most pressing issuesfor both individual and institutional users.
