The Ethereum Foundation (EF) formalized a new leadership structure for privacy programs, increasing privacy from a series of parallel initiatives to a coordinated “Privacy @EF” cluster that is explicitly organized around real-world use cases and deployments.
Ethereum makes privacy a priority
In a post on October 1st entitled “Privacy Cluster Leadership Announcement,” EF said it was “organising for scale and impact,” and named longtime ecosystem builder Igor Barinov as the coordinator of PSE @EF and the new coordinator of the Sam Richers as the new coordinator of the PSE (Privacy & Scaling Explorations) team. “Together, Igor and Andy will help ensure that Ethereum’s privacy work is impactful, consistent and accountable,” the foundation writes.
The announcement will reconstruct EF’s privacy mission as three concrete pillars: “private leads,” “private weils,” and “private proof,” which directly map to users and institutional needs. Private targets queries, authentication, and browsing that can withstand surveillance. Private Writes focuses on shielding actions such as payment, governance, and forwarding. The purpose of private proofs is to create “efficient, portable, and usable” evidence across contexts such as identity, data portability, and client-side proofs.
EF links these pillars to actual compliance and safety requirements, claiming that they are “necessary for agencies to comply with data protection standards,” helping individuals avoid leaking metadata and “protect private financial information.”
“To be the foundation of civilization infrastructure, Ethereum is not an abstract study in terms of privacy alone. It needs to be organized, resources and deployment at scale.
The post is closed with a dull belief that “Privacy is normal and Ethereum is for privacy,” and is a public invitation for builders to connect with Barinov and Guzman and explore the catalogue of “700+ Projects” in the privacy space on the chain.
Best known for the establishment of Blockscout, Gnosis Chain and Zkbob, Barinov applies infrastructure, open source stewardship and privacy product experiences. Guzman, who has been involved with PSE/EF since 2022, has moved from strategy and product leadership to PSE’s top operational role.
Essentially, the cluster model is designed to integrate ongoing work on computations that provide privacy with Ethereum’s publishability guarantee. Although the post does not list specific deliverables or dates, its emphasis on reading “portable” and “available” proofs, institutional compliance, and metadata maximization means a roadmap that extends beyond shielding forwarding for the journey of end-to-end private users. At the time of pressing, ETH traded $4,380.
