May 8, 2025 – Tetherthe largest company in the digital asset industry is bolstering its commitment to the free and open source software (FOSS) movement with an additional $100,000 grant to the BTCPay Server Foundation. This reaffirms the strategic mission of Tether for the second year in a row to expand direct support for the foundation and defending champion developers building infrastructure for financial freedom.
BTCPay server is a self-hosted, open-source cryptocurrency payment processor that allows thousands of companies, projects and communities around the world to accept Bitcoin and USD payments. The development of this software will keep your system up to date and be compatible with cutting-edge technologies such as the Lightning network, further expanding your actual use of Bitcoin. The 2025 grant will be built on the foundation built on last year’s contributions, allowing the BTCPay Server Foundation to expand its development efforts, improve usability and enhance its privacy-focused payment platform.
Tether CEO Paolo Aldoino said. “We firmly support the principles of financial freedom and individual privacy exemplified by BTCPay Server. This new grant to the BTCPayServer Foundation reflects respect for Cypherpunk’s principles that strengthen the digital asset movement: open source innovation.”
This new support makes Tether more widely aware of the key role of Foss in democratizing access to critical technologies and shaping the future of decentralized finances. Tether has consistently supported projects tailored to these goals, including fully encrypted platforms for building peer-to-peer applications, free peer-to-peer instant messaging applications that work without the need for centralized entities on the device, and free peer-to-peer instant messaging applications that work without the need for open source, modular software development kits. Bitcoin on every app, website and device contributes to a global infrastructure that is more fair, resilient and easier for users.
Rockstar Devsaid BTCPAY server’s core contributors and founding members. “Tether continues to recognize Foss’ value. In addition to supporting P2P (Hall Punch), Secure Message (Ket), and Wallet Development Kits, this second grant to the BTCPay Server Foundation reaffirms its commitment to decentralized payments. It is not hampered by geographical or financial barriers.”
As global demand for secure payment systems increases, Tether continues to set industry standards by helping FOSS pioneers promote privacy, independence and universal access to digital assets. Continued support in projects like these reinforces our commitment to advancing the digital ecosystem as thought leaders and enabling projects that drive meaningful change.
