The startup, which sells AI-driven mattresses for $3,000 for eight people sleep and a monthly subscription fee, has raised $100 million in Series D funding, hoping to strengthen relatively novel ideas within the consumer’s discretion sector.
The round was led by Founders Fund, Y Combinator, Valois Equity Partners and HSG (formerly Sequoia China). We also portrayed investments from F1 driver Charles Leclerc and Zak Brown, CEO McLaren Racing.
The deal brings the company’s valuation to around $500 million, with over $500 million pod sales reported since launch.
The 8-sleep “pod” system uses a water-filled tube on the mattress cover to regulate the bed temperature between 55°F and 110°F (13-43°C).
Built-in sensors track heart rate, breathing and heart rate fluctuations. This is used by an AI system called Autopilot to coordinate the environment in real time.
The price of the mattress topper starts at $2,500 and exceeds over $4,000 across the system. Next, you will find a subscription for “advanced features” between $17-25 per month. Yes, even mattresses require a membership plan.
The company has amassed a well-known fan base, including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Scarlett Johansson vows, and biohacker Brian Johnson is another user, who spends $2 million a year on anti-aging.

“This new funding will accelerate the deployment of AI for sleep optimization, expanding it to medical applications such as menopause sleep and sleep apnea, enabling it to bring technology to millions of people around the world,” CEO Matteo Francesci said in a statement. The former lawyer became a sleep obsession and founded the company in 2014 after suffering from his own sleep problems.
But not all feedback is positive. On social media, users share stories about glitches, stopping the system from functioning completely, leaving expensive and non-functioning beds. Others have reported issues with leaks and connectivity issues.
My AI-controlled bed is too cold, so I woke up. I didn’t go to adjust the temperature as 8 sleep apps are currently broken. I have a POD3 rather than an upgraded POD4 with physical controls, so I can’t adjust it by hand.
Now I’m stuck in a cold bed. This feels dystopian.

The AI in the system is known by some users as “black boxes.” Some users complain that they are not providing transparent data.
New Eight Sleep funding will support the development of what is called “sleep agents,” an AI that runs thousands of nightly simulations to further improve user rest. The company is also seeking FDA approval for medical applications of the technology, including treating menopause hot flashes and sleep apnea.
The company says the AI model has processed over a billion hours of sleep data. With a fresh capital of $100 million, the 8 sleep bets leave the hardware and software blends to continue to find a decent place to rest, regardless of price.
