Bitcoin core maintainers who control central GitHub repository are developing their rarely exercised power to censor speeches between developers.
This week, dozens of developers voted for a split disagreement on a proposal to ease the data storage capabilities of transactions using Op_return, the Bitcoin operational code.
The conflict has led many prominent developers to blame what the mod saw as exile after muting senior members with passionate perspectives.
On one side of the argument, conservatives argue that they will maintain or further shrink the 83-byte DataCarrier limit for Op_return. On the other side, Progressive wants to ease that threshold, focusing on rich data storage options elsewhere.
When the debate cried out, Github moderators silenced two major conservatives, Luke Dashul and the Bitcoin mechanic. The two men argued to use Bitcoin blockchain to ease filters that make it easier to store non-financial data.
They pointed out Corporate profits, spam risk, and UTXO verification concerns Lifts the data storage function of op_return.
The censorship of their speeches has infuriated the community who valued the censorship-resistant properties of Bitcoin (BTC).
Giacomo Zucco called the moderators “absolutely out of control” and “a self-appointed politician Cabal.” Michelle Weekly called censorship “opposed to the spirit of Bitcoin.”
Another observer said,Cooperative Community Disruption. ”

Censored op_return speech
Jameson Ropp, who leads the other side of the debate, conveniently defended Github’s “moderateness” that censored his enemy’s speech.
He praised the censorship as a way to return the focus on Technical Pull Requests (PR), and denounced his muted interlocutors for the Ad Hominem attack. He also argued that Github repository maintainers only block people who have never contributed to Bitcoin Core.
In reality, moderators have muted usernames belonging to Bitcoin mechanics who have contributed to core development for many years. They also muted various other contributors.
Rockstar Dev warned that “the banned season appears to be in full swing.”
Samson Mow summarized the state of the OP_Return discussion that #FixTheFilters trended in X. “It should be based on a rough consensus. Anyone can know that there is no consensus on the relaxation limits of op_return.”
