Sony’s blockchain division plans to bring a huge line of Japanese social media into the Web3 world and adapt several popular mini-apps to Sony’s Sonaium network, the company announced Wednesday.
Line reports roughly 200 million active users across the platform, and the agreement brings four line-based games, or “mini apps,” to Sonaium, Sleeper Gotch, Farm Friends, Puffy Matches and Pocket Mobs. The integration is intended to promote features such as rewards and purchases within the game.
Soneium is primarily managed by Sony Block Solutions Labs. This is a joint program between Sony and Singapore-based Startale Labs. According to a statement shared with Coindesk, SBSL envisions partnerships as a way to “transcend boundaries and allow users to experience the benefits of Web3 without friction.”
“The Line has built a strong presence and integrating successful mini-apps into the Sonium ecosystem is the next step to making Sonium more accessible,” said Vawatanabe, chairman of Sony Block Solutions Lab. “We believe this collaboration will drive engagement and recruitment in ways that were previously difficult to achieve.”
Soneium was released in January and said at the time the team wanted to bridge Web2 users to the Web3 space. Blockchain is Layer 2 above Ethereum, which uses optimistic OP stack technology. According to L2 Beat, it is currently locked as the 15th largest Layer 2 network.
