Poste Italiane can support the final stage of the digital euro rollout thanks to its wide customer base, according to Piero Cipollone, an ECB executive committee member.
Poste Italiane may do more than deliver mail immediately and manage your savings account. It could help bring the digital euro to millions of Italians. This is reported by Piero Cipolon, a member of the European Central Bank’s Executive Committee, who came up with ideas at an online event hosted by ASVIS.
At press time, the ECB is still preparing to roll out the digital euro. Once the system is installed, Cipollone will need a trusted partner to handle what is called “The Last Mile.”
Cipollone said Poste Italiane could help the ECB adopt the digital euro, pointing out that “it has millions of clients and can easily provide support access to the digital euro.”

But that wouldn’t be a major leap for Poste Italiane. In addition to delivering letters and packages, the company already offers banking and financial services.
The digital euro idea may sound futuristic, but the ECB says it is becoming a necessary step. More people are tapping on phones and swiping cards, but cash usage continues to decline. Cipollone had previously argued that “in the digital age, cash alone cannot work.”
He also tried to reassure the public that this was not the end of physical money. The Digital Euro will not replace it as it is designed to provide state-backed options in a world where most digital payments are processed by private companies.
If everyone, including the political side, goes smoothly, Cipollone said the first digital euro trade could occur “by mid-2028.”
