MetaMask is celebrating its 10th anniversary and plans to expand beyond its roots as a self-custodial cryptocurrency wallet into a broader platform for payments, savings, and investments.
The ConsenSys-developed platform has appointed Gal Elder as chief product officer to lead Open Money, an initiative aimed at unifying payments, savings, investments and digital assets into a single self-custodial platform.
Founded in 2016 by Kumavis and Dan Finlay, MetaMask started as an Ethereum browser wallet and has since expanded to support Bitcoin, Solana, and hundreds of blockchain networks.
The platform has over 100 million downloads and trillions of dollars in cumulative trading volume. The company says MetaMask is available in about 190 countries.
Mr. Elder previously led the MetaMask team responsible for fiat access, swaps, cross-chain bridges, transaction protection, stablecoin yield products, the MetaMask Card, and the recently launched Money Account.
He joined Consensys in 2020 following the acquisition of Fluidity to lead product development. Eldar also worked on AirSwap and its initial infrastructure for tokenized assets and decentralized credits.
“People aren’t thinking about wallets or blockchain. They’re thinking about what they want to do with their money,” Elder said.
ConsenSys founder and CEO Joe Rubin said MetaMask will use the infrastructure it developed over its first 10 years to build a financial service that allows users to directly manage their assets.
“We built the rails, and now we’re rebuilding our finances on top of that,” Rubin said.
MetaMask said its security systems blocked more than 6.5 million accesses to malicious websites and thwarted nearly 150,000 malicious transactions during 2025. The company estimates that these protections have prevented users from losing more than $500 million.
This wallet uses security alerts, transaction protection, real-time threat monitoring, and independent auditing. MetaMask is also developing an agent wallet designed to allow artificial intelligence agents to interact with decentralized financial applications while applying security checks to transactions.
As part of the anniversary celebration, MetaMask released an app feature that summarizes each user’s on-chain activity and generates on-chain persona cards with custom classes and levels.
