OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.6 models named Sol, Terra, and Luna, prompting comparisons to some of the most well-known blockchain projects in the cryptocurrency industry.
According to OpenAI, the company has launched a limited preview of three GPT-5.6 models: Sol, Terra, and Luna.
The announcement immediately gained attention across crypto-focused social media due to the similarities in name to Solana’s SOL token and the Terra ecosystem, whose LUNA token became synonymous with the industry’s biggest collapse in 2022.
Model names bring back memories of major cryptographic projects
In a blog post, OpenAI explained that Sol is the company’s flagship GPT-5.6 model, while Terra is designed as a well-rounded option for everyday tasks. The company says Luna serves as a fast, low-cost entry point in its new lineup.
OpenAI says the three models sit between the company’s high-end GPT-5.5 products and more affordable options. Sol also introduces new “max” and “ultra” modes for advanced inference and agent-based workflows. The company added that the GPT-5.6 family offers more powerful coding, scientific research, and cybersecurity features than previous models.
Although these names quickly caught the attention of cryptocurrency users, OpenAI did not associate them with digital assets. Instead, the company said the names represent different functional levels within the GPT-5.6 series.
Still, the similarities have proven difficult for crypto traders to ignore. While Sol shares its name with the ticker used by Solana’s native token, Terra and Luna will revive the branding of the Terra blockchain ecosystem, which collapsed in 2022 after the algorithmic stablecoin’s failure wiped out tens of billions of dollars in market value.
This release comes just days after OpenAI unveiled Jalapeño, the first custom-made artificial intelligence chip developed with Broadcom. OpenAI says the processor was built in nine months and is designed for inference workloads that power products such as ChatGPT, Codex, and future AI agents.
The company said developing its own hardware will give it more flexibility as demand for AI computing continues to grow.
Rollout will remain limited while safety testing continues
Rather than making GPT-5.6 immediately available to everyone, OpenAI stated that this release is a limited preview as additional safety testing continues before wider public availability. The company also said that Sol’s new inference mode is aimed at more complex tasks that require long processing times.
The preview follows reports that the White House has asked OpenAI to limit the initial deployment of GPT-5.6. The company authorized the limited release, but the announcement did not link the decision to the government’s request.
Separately, Amazon pulled out of distributing the film “Artificial,” starring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and also starring Elon Musk, but continued talks with the filmmakers about finding another distributor. The decision comes as Amazon expands its commercial relationship with OpenAI through multibillion-dollar investment commitments tied to future milestones.
But for the cryptocurrency market, it was the naming of Sol, Terra, and Luna that sparked the strongest reaction online, reigniting the debate over two of the industry’s best-known blockchain brands, despite OpenAI saying the names were chosen solely to differentiate the capabilities of its latest AI models.
