FTX co-founder Sam Bankman Fried has formally applied for a pardon from President Trump, according to the Department of Justice’s Office of Pardon Counsel’s website.
Bankman Fried was convicted of fraud and money laundering in 2024 and is serving a 25-year sentence. The pardon application was first reported by Bloomberg News.
Trump pardoned hundreds of people during his second term. The majority were participants in the January 6 riot, but many were convicted of financial fraud. An NBC News analysis in January found that more than half of the individual pardons granted were for people who committed white-collar crimes such as money laundering, bank fraud and wire fraud.
President Trump has pardoned many people who have donated large sums of money to his political activities. Few of the people he granted pardons filed formal applications with the Justice Department, according to Bloomberg.
