Zcash validators have orchestrated emergency protocol upgrades and temporarily halted Orchard transactions until a fix is published after a developer discovered a vulnerability affecting the network’s Orchard shielded pool.
In an update published in June 2ndthe Zcash team said the issue was identified through regular audits and security reviews before any known exploits occurred.
The project emphasized:
- User funds are kept safe and
- Privacy is not violated;
- And this issue only affects Zcash’s newest shielded transaction pool, Orchard.
The protocol level changes took effect at approximately 1 p.m.12:30pm Eastern Time above June 1st.
Orchard trading has been temporarily disabled
According to the announcement, Orchard-related transactions are currently not being mined as the validator implements a coordinated upgrade.
Wallet users will be temporarily unable to send or receive Orchard funds until the deployment is complete.
However, the rest of the Zcash network will continue to operate.
Transactions involving:
- old sapling shield pool,
- transparent address,
- and ZEC balance held by the exchange
continues to function normally.
The project expects Orchard transactions to be re-enabled later June 2ndafter the upgrade process is completed.
Consensus-level responses highlight the seriousness of the problem
Although the project has not yet disclosed the technical details of the vulnerability, the developers suggested that the issue requires protocol-level changes rather than regular software updates.
This difference suggests that validators need to adopt new consensus rules to address the problem.
The coordinated response has led some observers to characterize the upgrade as: Hard fork-style intervention.
However, unlike contentious blockchain forks that create competing chains, the Zcash ecosystem appears to be aligned around a single upgrade path designed to maintain network integrity with minimal disruption.
Rather than suspending the entire network, the validator effectively isolated the affected Orchard subsystems while allowing most Zcash activity to continue uninterrupted.
Other protocols may also be considering adopting Orchard
One of the most notable aspects of this announcement is that Zcash revealed that it is notifying maintainers of other protocols that have deployed Orchard.
The statement suggests that the issue may extend beyond Zcash’s own implementation and may impact projects that utilize Orchard-related technologies.
Although the developers have not yet released the full technical details, this is a common practice during active security upgrades to reduce the risk of exploitation before a fix is widely deployed.
The project said additional information will be shared once the upgrade process is complete.
Final summary
- Zcash validator has adopted emergency protocol upgrades after developers discovered a vulnerability affecting the Orchard shielded pool.
- The network will continue to operate, but Orchard transactions will be temporarily disabled until the coordinated upgrade is complete.
