Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin issued one of his toughest warnings to date. If the network continues to be limited to DeFi, obsessed with yield and political meme coins, it will be a betrayal of Ethereum’s original mission.

In a March 3 post on social network
He argues that even in the aspects the ecosystem claims to value most, such as freedom, privacy, security of digital life, and community self-organization, Ethereum appears to be largely lacking in meaningfully improving the lives of those exposed to these forces. Buterin said:
Even in aspects that we care deeply about (freedom, privacy, security of digital life, community self-organization, etc.), Ethereum seems to be lacking in meaningfully improving the lives of those exposed to these things.
Buterin emphasizes that his criticism is not aimed at DeFi itself. But he warns against the bigoted culture that has grown up around empty trends that turn politics and real-world concerns into spectacle through political meme coins and “a variety of zero-sum gambling applications.”
Meanwhile, he laments that Ethereum’s impact on improving people’s lives will be minimal if it remains “laser-focused” on finance, a stark contrast to what he calls “emancipatory technologies” such as Starlink and Signal that are already reshaping the balance of power in the real world. He acknowledges the importance of economic freedom, but argues that it is no longer enough. Buterin added:
Financial freedom and security are very important. But it seems clear that adding a completely free, open, sovereign, non-degradable financial system would solve some problems, but leave most of our deep concerns about the world unresolved. It’s fine for individuals to focus on finances, but we need to be part of a larger whole that has a voice on other issues as well.
The path to sanctuary technology
Understanding that “Ethereum cannot repair the world,” Buterin suggests that what Ethereum should do is consider itself “part of an ecosystem that builds ‘sanctuary technologies.’” This means tools that give people a place to communicate, organize, and hold values in places that cannot be easily monitored, censored, or confiscated by states or corporations.
The goal is non-totalization
The ambitious and holistic approach proposed by Buterin pursues the main objective of “enabling non-weaponizable interdependence” as opposed to remaking the world in the form of Ethereum. In summary, Buterin says this interdependence is built on four pillars: finance (ETH, stablecoins, DeFi), communication (encrypted messaging, censorship-resistant social), coordination (DAOs, crowdfunding, mutual aid), and identity (non-custodial identity and reputation). In Buterin’s words:
Ethereum’s role is to create a “digital space” where different entities can collaborate and interact.
When cryptocurrency becomes a survival technology
Cryptocurrencies are already showing what blockchain can look like when it becomes a survival tool rather than a place of transaction. In places like Venezuela, families use stablecoins and Bitcoin to bypass capital controls and send money, protect savings from hyperinflation and move money when local banks fail or become tools of state control. Activists and dissidents rely on censorship-proof rails to receive support, fund their legal defenses, and maintain ties to the global economy from which governments are trying to cut them off.
