The Ethereum Foundation’s latest privacy-focused update has sparked quite a debate within the Cardano (ADA) community.
The Cardano community likens the Ethereum Foundation’s new privacy-focused initiatives to the Midnight network associated with the Cardano ecosystem.
The Ethereum Foundation previously announced an expansion of its privacy efforts. The statement announced the creation of a new “Privacy Cluster” consisting of 47 researchers, engineers, and cryptography experts. This cluster includes various subprojects such as Secret Read and Write, Secret Proof, Hidden Identities, Privacy Experience, Enterprise Privacy Task Force (IPTF), and Kohaku.
The foundation’s statement aims to enable users to make private payments, votes and transactions without the risk of surveillance or data leaks. This also includes projects like zkID (Zero Knowledge Identity), which prevents unnecessary information sharing during the identity verification process.
The Ethereum Foundation issued the following statement regarding these studies:
“Privacy should be a top-tier feature of the Ethereum ecosystem. We are committed to making this vision a reality for both individuals and organizations.”
However, the Cardano community likened this announcement to the Midnight Network that Cardano has been developing for many years. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson also joined the discussion and directly mentioned Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin.
“Sorry, Vitalik Buterin. There are some things that cannot be copied. Midnight is built for the 4th generation and adapting the first layer of Ethereum (L1) to it is not possible without fundamentally changing the tokenomics.”
Within the Cardano ecosystem, Midnight is described as a network that stands out for its “secret smart contract” architecture, which aims to be compliant with regulations while protecting data privacy.
